Acute Tonsilitis

Tonsillitis is inflammation of the palatine tonsils as a result of either a bacterial or viral infection.

The palatine tonsils are a concentration of lymphoid tissue within the oropharynx.

Tonsillitis will often occur in conjunction with inflammation of other areas of the mouth, giving rise to the terms tonsillopharyngitis (the pharynx is also involved), and adenotonsillitis (the adenoids are also involved).
